Sketches from the Independent Activities Period This week, I am fulfilling my dream of taking over the Admissions page with a series of six consecutive posts. I am calling the takeover Yultide (credit to the bloggers for the awesome name). Today is Yultide Day 1, and also the sequel to Sketches from the Fall Semester. ___________________________________________ Prefrosh!!! We have Early Action adMITs now, and the circle of (admissions) life continues. The 2021s have been broken into the MIT routine. The 2022s are full of excitement and hope. As a senior blogger, I’ve gotten the privilege to interact with the new cool kids on the block. Can’t wait for the regular action folks, and this years Pi Day video. Wisconsin Interview and Cheese Last week, I went to Madison, Wisconsin for an onsite interview at a healthcare software company (with travel, food, and accommodations fully covered!). I wont name the company, but I still want to talk about all the cheese. Seriously, I bought so much cheese. My favorite was marble cheese with pepperoni, but plain brick cheese was pretty good too. I also got to eat hot cheese curds at the supposedly best cheese curd place in Madison with other recruits and a company representative. In other impressions, the company had a slide instead of stairs in one of the buildings, and DD sword and throne room in another building. I got to stay in a hotel in downtown Madison right around the corner from the beautiful Wisconsin State Capitol. My window opened up to the hotel pool, so my sole tourist-y trip was to Target to buy a swimsuit. No regrets there: turns out, a late-night swim leads to the best sleep, so I plan to justify the purchase of the swimsuit by using the MIT pools as wellâ€"they are 10 and 2 minutes away from my room. One last impression: the people in Wisconsin are so friendly. My taxi driver suggested that we stop at a local grocery store so I could buy some good cheese. And everyone was so nice and patient! Going back to Boston, a big city, from the Midwest always requires some adjustment. For example, you need to dishabituate to saying “excuse me.” Biopharmaceutical Trip One of the perks of the Institute is the connections the Institute has with local STEM companies. Last week, I went to on an onsite visit at a local biopharmaceutical company with a group of students, arranged by the MIT career office. I won’t say which company, but I will say that the view of the ocean from their offices was amazing, and so was the taco lunch. On a serious note, I loved hearing about the place and being able to connect with the employees. I am very excited to apply. Events like these make me feel incredibly lucky to attend this place. Who says MIT students aren’t cool? My friends and I finally went to a real hip club in downtown Boston. It was louder than I expected. The DJ’s medleys weren’t particularly great, but it was still a fascinating cultural experience (I could talk at length about the gender dynamics, but this probably isnt the best place). Plus, I actually danced! We’re going again this weekend because it’s Bad Ideas weekend (more on that later) so it’s appropriate. Fun fact: Massachusetts laws prohibit the sale of alcohol after 2am (true to its Puritan roots) so everything closes early and mobs of people wander in the cold because of Lyft/Ubers ridiculous price hikes. Queer Stand-Up Comedian Performs at MIT In November, I received an email from [emailprotected] with the first line written in large bold letters: DeAnne Smith is coming to MIT to give a live stand-up show!!!!! Below that, the email said, DeAnne Smith is a queer comedian. If you haven’t heard of them, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1wveGujCrI Once I read and watched all that, I immediately forwarded the invitation to my friend with the caption WANNA SEE THIS? Fortunately, she did. Not only that, but a group of us converged in the kitchen, all excited about the show. And it was totally worth it. Stand-up comedy is always better live, and DeAnne Smith was amazing. Plus, they tailored their show to our audience, so I believe they learned something from us as well. Not much of a story, but I had to share it because it highlights the range of events you can attend at MIT. A New Hobby! I have a new hobby: embroidery. It is my first actual adult hobby. Part of me is embarrassed to say the name of the activity out loud (embroidery has certain gendered connotations), though another part of me is happy that I finally have a legitimate answer to the “what’s your hobby?” question (it used to be UROPs, chilling, and blogging). I chose cross stitch because I have some experience in the craft, though back when I was a kid I couldn’t do it much in order to not to hurt my eyes so, in a way, the new hobby is a rebellion. The stuff I’ve embroidered so far has made for great gifts, and it is quite adult  and cool. I defend the hobby because I am still working through my internalized good girl embroiders sterotype. I have even looked into opening an Etsy shop for nerd embroidery (e.g. math cross stitch!) because I have some extra time this month. Plus, I prefer to make stuff for other people anyway. Pieces Ive made so far are below. All except the motivational just do it later were gifts for friends and family (I am especially proud to give a friend some friendly syphillis). Credit for the just do it later cross stitch goes to The Oatmeal.     Grocery Shopping I think I am becoming an adult because I have started going to different stores for different foods to get the best deals, a practice that I couldn’t understand before. The extra trips are definitely worth it though, especially now that the closest supermarket to campus, StarMarket, is closing. Now I go to Trader Joe’s in Back Bay, Boston (the smallest Trader Joe’s ever; ~20 mins away by bus) for snacks and frozen food. Their prepared frozen meals are surprisingly affordable and very convenient. I go to Bfresh in Davis Square, Sommerville (~15 mins away by subway) for fresh foods, such as fish, vegetables and fruit, which are often sold at super low Ohio-level prices. Other types of food are pretty expensive at Bfresh though, as it is a pretty “hipster” place (e.g. they have a bluebernie kombucha on tap flavor). I go to StarMarket in Porter Square, Somerville (~15 mins away by subway) for general foods and smoothie supplies. I go to the mini-Target in Central Square, Cambri dge (~5 mins away by subway, ~15 mins walking) for daily necessities such as milk or yogurt. All this isn’t really a sketch, but I’ve had a lot of prefrosh ask me about eating at MIT, so this is a preview of the answer, more to come soon (I’ve also written about “cooking” for yourself before  here). IAP Life and Setting Records January is IAP (Independent Activities Period) at MIT, which offers a plethora of random activities, ranging from glass-blowing to bartender training (21+ because theres actual alcohol). Weve even had Charm School which, among other things, taught students the latest flirting techniquesâ€"a skill I believe is impossible to teach. Personally, I am working on my thesis, learning how to code better (for my thesis and beyond), directing and acting in The Vagina Monologues as usual, and hanging out with my friendsâ€"IAP is when MIT feels most relaxed because most people aren’t taking classes. For a month, we get to catch up on all the rest and socialization. In record-setting news, I slept for 23 hours in a row  one day last week, which was intense. Fortunately, I woke up in time for the pharmaceuitcal company site visit. If Id missed it, my MIT career account with all the job applications wouldve been suspended! Update: I have fixed my sleep schedule!!! For three days, I have been sleeping at relatively normal-people hours, and feeling great. This is very exciting news. Fall Semester Reflections As has become “tradition,” I miss (as in, yearn for) at least two of my fall classes: 9.46 Neuroscience of Morality and 9.85 Infant and Child Development. The two offerings completely shifted the way my brain thinks about itself, and the way I perceive humanity. For example, I can now make arguments on why AI should not be feared in the way it is in the mainstream (heres why), but we should be concerned about some of artificial intelligences current applications (e.g. using proprietary software to determine the lengths of convicts’ sentences by predicting the likelihood of their recidivism). Fun tangent: I met a prefrosh recently who was interested in AI and actually knew and loved the TED Talk by my 9.85 Infant and Childhood Cognition professor! I also learned why humans are, indeed, special compared to non-human animals. And how human beings can be truly good, but there are also cases in which we are all driven to act immorally (see Milgram experiments overview here and a postive recent interpretation of the results here). Additionally, I learned some practical life skills, such as how to be a better human and how to raise better children. In other academic news: for the first time, I veered dangerously close to not passing something, in this case 8.02 Physics II, which is taught in the generally despised TEAL (Technology-Enhanced Active Learning) format. In my defense, a GIR (General Institute Requirement), especially in TEAL format, was one of my lowest priorities senior year, way behind more important classes for my newly-declared minor, thesis work, job search, etc. Physics II worked out in the end, and, more importantly, I am a better human after this fall. The Things You Learn in College My favorite description of college is that it’s the special transitional time when you live on your own and make personal choices but don’t yet have to clean your own bathroom. With college lecture videos available freely online, the main selling point of college is now the experiences you get: living with roommates, handling your daily shit in a controlled environment, negotiating, and gaining access to important people in academia. If not for MIT, I would not have discovered my true interests, nor experimented with diverse fields from education to public health. I would not have learned how to coexist with a diverse group of people, network, do research and write better papers, thrive in a challenging environment, and travel on my own. I guess those aren’t tiny, as the title of the sketch suggestsâ€"I really don’t know what I’d do without MIT. Going to the Movies My friends and I saw Coco recently, and it was spectacular. Once again, Pixar was able to emotionally destroy the viewer, but not enough that we could blame the creators for emotional manipulation. If you’ve seen Coco and remember the singing to Coco scene, you can probably relate. That scene is when I started crying, and I was the last of my friends to break down. On a fun note, I saw Proud Mary  starting the badass Taraji P. Henson last week and discovered a hidden foreign-language gem. A tiny scrap of dialogue heard from Russian mobsters included the phrase “we fixed their electionâ€"a perk of knowing a foreign language. Meta Sketch about Being a Blogger Being a blogger is one of the coolest roles at MIT. Especially during CPW, when the prefrosh still think we’re particularly cool (though I love meeting the prefrosh regardless of their level of interest in the blogs). Bloggers get (almost) free range to write about their personal life and give advice to people in the difficult times we were once in. Urbanization and Industrialization in the Progressive Era - Free Essay Example

The progressives were basically individuals or groups that considered urbanization and industrialization are the main cause for many of the social and political issues rises during the period of 1890 to 1920 and helped reform the social problems such as inequalities, social justice, political corruption, trusts, monopolies, workforce safety, womens right and city services. The progressives believed that the reformation would end government corruption, and end the industrial capitalism in the society. During the Gilded Age, Americas industry was rapidly growing along with the high number immigrant enter the United States. Even though the American industry was booming, it also brought along with lots of issues involved the people and the politic. First major issue was about the workforce and the laborers. Many of the companies and factories did not have any standards, regulations or instruction for the workers to follow; thus created a very dangerous workplace for the workers. In fact, many workers got hurt working at the factories and other member of the workers family have to fill in so that the production would not discontinue that results in the company losing profits. The companies used their power to force the workers to work longer hour with lower wages so that they could make more profits in the competitive markets. Thus, the workers were struggle supporting their lives with such low wage. With the massive number of immigrants, there were not enough jobs to provide for all the people, so the people had to turn to each other instead of the establishment for the sake of not starve and die, and the government did not lay an eye on the people. Second issue that was also important was the quality of foods in the country. During this period, the government had very little involve/control over the food quality that has been produce and consume in the country. Food and drug companies did not label the ingredients on their packages and also the consumers little did they know about what was in the products they were using and consuming. The book The Jungle by Upton Sinclair showed us the underneath surface of the food industry where the manufacture condition was terribly maintained and the government had no regulations or laws in protect the consumers from the bad quality food that flowing around the country in the Gilded Age period. Those are just the few highlights of the social problems that involved the industrialism. In addition to the industrial capitalized, there were also some political issues that made the people suffered such as the unfair election, unfair voting and neglect the peoples needs by the government. The Progressive Era was the movement that promised to unravel all the problems since the Gilded Age from industrial to political inequality and corruption. Therefore, there were may individuals and group involved and many of the events happened that change the United States forever. On August 12th, 1889, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Star founded the Hull House to provided education for the working class people as well as social life for people of the district of Chicago. This is the first thing that happened during the Progressive Era that meant to help the people of the United States, especially the immigrants. The Hull House helped immigrants with place to live and education opportunities for those who needed and in return, they will contribute their services for other people in the neighbors. In 1905, the Wobblies also known as the Industrial Workers of the World founded in Chicago, Illinois to indemnify every wage-worker, no matter what his religion, fatherland or trade. They considered radical socialists and they wanted to end the capitalism and the government exploitation. The Wobblies protected the working class by ensure they know their rights by ensured to have better working conditions, shorter working hours and better pay so that they could support their regular lives and families. As I mentioned above that the working condition was so bad that it effected the quality of the foods that produce during the era. In February 26th, 1906, Upton Sinclair published the book named The Jungle and its content was so disturbing in which describe the work conditions of such all the joints in [the mans] fingers might be eaten by the acid, the butchers and floorsmen[s thumbs] was mere a lump of flesh against which man pressed the knife to hold it, in the cooking room the germ of tuberculosis might live for two years, and the worst of them all was who worked in tank-rooms full of steam, and in some of which there were open vats near the level of the floor, their peculiar trouble was that they fell into the vats; and when they were fished out there was never enough of them left to be worth exhibiting,- sometimes they would be overlooked for days, till all but the bones of them had gone out to the world as Dunhams Pure Leaf Lard! (The Jungle). These are just some of the dangerou s conditions that the worker had to work and people never know what they consume into their body as someone could die in the tank of food or someones finger might be grind together with the beef, then packed and sell it to the consumers. This book unfolded the truth about the work conditions inside the factory as well as the unsafe food quality that led to the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act began in 1906. With the growth of the population, newspaper and magazines had the chance to reach more readers and the muckrakers, the writers, journalists, etc. exposed the truth about the industrial capitalization and the government exploitation. They investigated the wealthy and the escalation of their businesses that brought them extreme fortunes, they also researched the factories, work conditions of the worker and the affection of the goods quality to the consumers. For instance, Jacob Riis, the author of the book How the Other Half Lives, photographed the poor peoples living conditions in Americas cities and the resulted in New York City passed the Tenement Act of 1901 to ensure the health and safety of the resident buildings. In addition, the political reforms of vote and election process changed dramatically through Secret Ballot, Initiative, Referendum, Recall, Direct Party Primaries, and Direct Election of Senators. Some of the States also passed their regulations to ensure the health and safety of working conditions in factories by limit the number of working hours, eliminated child labor and pay wages fairly, they also ensured the living conditions in urban housing. In 1883, the Congress passed the Pend leton Act, which also called Civil Service Commission to provide the merit of selecting the appointees and in 1889, Theodore Roosevelt became U.S. Civil Service Commissioner and reformed the civil service system. The Nineteenth Amendment that give women the right to vote in 1920 was also a big part of the Progressive Era. Besides that, Sixteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Amendments also added to the Constitution during this period. The Antitrust Legislation in 1914 also helped protect the consumers from unfair business with governments power and the Federal Trade Commission Act created to further protect the consumers. The Progressive Era was the time that America truly trying to solve the social and political issues yet different times had its own problems that required reforms. Nowadays, the racism, political and and government system problems are still existing. America were never perfect, today and in the future, it would never be perfect for such a diverse and complex country.

In life, we are constantly faced with situations and scenarios where we have to make choices. Deciding which choices we make is often times determined by what we deem as right and wrong. There are no clear-cut, black and white answers to these questions, so we have to take it upon ourselves to do our best to make the right choices. Imagine this, your country is heading to war, and you want to help serve your country against the terrorists attacking your home. So you go to school majoring in the enimes language. However, while going through school it is discovered that your country is using extreme tactics like torturing prisoners of war. Would you still join the war after college? What is the right thing to do? The first question you should ask yourself is â€Å"is the war and the tactics used morally just†. The answer to that is yes. The next question you should ask is â€Å"is it the right thing for me to join the war†. The right thing to do is to continue helping you r country and going to war. It is the right thing to do because the actions taken were just, and fighting in the war in the end will bring peace and happiness. So how could torture be considered just? Mill states, actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness. This is saying that in order for an act to be â€Å"right† it must bring as much pleasure or happiness as possible while avoiding as much pain as possible. Torture is a horrific act. Similarly, the mechanics behind the oppression of women have been exhaustively researched and debated over. However, if one is to analyze and compare literature born out of the height of the colonial age, and literature released within our own lifetime, they may actually arguably find very little difference in how they characterize women; in particular, there seems to still be a racial element of subjugation, whether intentional or not. By examining the dynamics between the feminine ‘natural’ and the masculine ‘human’ in Aphra Behn’s 1688 novel ‘Oroonoko’ and Couto’s ‘The Tuner of Silences’, published in 2009, I will argue how men and women are constructed differently in the literary s ense as not only as natural beings, but also as inhabiting natural assumed roles in relation to one another and the ecology they are a part of. Specifically, these texts illuminate the striking similarity between the human cultural imposition on natural spaces, and the masculine imposition and domination of female identities. Local government with health department should conduct public awareness programs on the periodic basis to make the people aware about this dengue fever and about all the prevention and control measures that can be taken. Public awareness can be created through various means which includes media awareness, using the social media and broadcasting awareness on television and internet. Communities can be used as a public awareness in small areas and region. Campaigning strategies can be used to make public at large aware of the dengue fever. The monthly or weekly meeting can be held in residential and businesses areas to communicate the important message and to communicate people about the prevention and control of this virus. Advantages are:- People of all categories can be part of these activities i.e. high standard and middle- class person. Social media is used by most of the public in one way or the other, through which awareness can be easily spread. Old age people like to be participating in the society meeting and all communities meeting, through which other family members can be communicated. Disadvantages are:- This is one of the time- consuming activities, which requires people to take some time out and be part of the campaigns and meetings. It is an expensive task that requires proper setup and places. Hence, recommendation would be conducting the public awareness on time to time basis to make the public aware of this viral disease. The more awareness is created, the more the people will take steps to make them protect against the infection and protect from the mosquito bites. For this, a cross-sectional pilot study was conducted among the people visiting one of the famous hospitals in some small region of Australia. Through the method of convenience sampling, a pre-tested questionnaire was asked face- to- face as an interview with four hundred visitors in a span of time. This was done to access the knowledge level and awareness among the people about the dengue virus and the practices they follow in their daily routine to prevent this growing viral infection. And the score of knowledge at the last was recorded on a scale 1-3. Result was, about 90% of the individuals interviewed had heard about the dengue fever. While the sufficient knowledge about this virus with early symptoms details and types was found in only 38.5% of the individuals, who appeared for the interview. Result also showed that the knowledge that was based upon preventive measures was found to be focused towards the preventive measures rather than eradication of mosquito population. Use of mosquito coils and sprays was the only best most preventive measure known among the set of people interviewed. As a public awareness tool, television was considered as the most important and useful source of information about any disease. Therefore it clarifies that public awareness activities and campaign plays an important role to educate the public at mass level. Short documentary movie, shown on Television or any social media can play a vital role to educate the people. Types of public awareness programs are rolled out from time to time by health government and local government for literate and illiterate class of people in the language commonly known among the people. Future Actions that can be taken:- With the aim to prevent and treat dengue infection in the future, Control of mosquito transmission, development of dengue virus vaccine and antiviral medicine constitute the main action to be taken to prevent this outbreak at higher level. Control of mosquitoes (vector) transmission can be done by keeping species like guppies or copepods in standing water, and infecting the mosquito population with these bacteria. There should be proper techniques to deal with the water waste and stagnant water mainly during the peak rainy seasons and the deep holes if any in the near buy areas, i.e. in home gardens and public places should be completely filled so that we can minimize the chances of mosquitoes breeding. Mosquitoes also breeds in the useless tyres and empty drums kept in the houses and garages and industries, if kept in open. Proper check should be done so that water does not become stagnant in any case. Due to increasing cases of epidemics and cases of enhancing severity of dengue infection, the necessity to develop a dengue vaccine and antiviral drug has gained a considerable importance. Several laboratory test and several researches are done and carried on in many parts of the world under the International Organization to achieve success in preparation of antiviral drug and the vaccine. World Health organization (WHO) is constantly performing research and is issuing guidelines on timely basis to fight this virus. Conclusion Dengue has become a global life- threatening public health concern, affecting around 2.5 billion individuals in more than 100 countries. The doctors and the physician should be up to date and aware about the clinical manifestations of the prevailing condition and ensure an adequate early treatment is available to the patient, as the dengue fever can progress to life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, which is fatal and can even cause the death of the victim. Future directions to this combat dreadful disease aim at the methods to control the breeding of mosquito, development of a vaccine to fight all the types of viruses of dengue and antiviral drug regimen.
